CELTA ONLINE | BLENDED COURSE

The online CELTA course is a blended learning course, always combining online self-study with hands-on teaching practice. You do most of your work online from any location in the world and you only need to travel to our CELTA centre for a 3-week teaching practice module in July 2018.

COURSE SCHEDULE

CELTA APPLICATION PROCESS

1. Submit your application online (the green button above).
2. Complete pre-interview tasks (sent to you via email).
3. Take part in an interview (face-to-face in Warsaw or via Skype).
4. After you receive a letter of confirmation, sign the course service agreement and pay the course fee.
5. Complete pre-course tasks before the course starts.

What’s the difference between the face-to-face and online CELTA?

FACE-TO-FACE

During the face-to-face course (which takes 20 days or 10 weekends to complete), you do all the input sessions (workshops) and your teaching practice at LANG in Warsaw. The teaching practice means 6 hours of lessons you plan and run. You teach 2 groups of up to 12 adult learners, each at a different level (usually, A2 and B2).

ONLINE COURSE

During the online course (which at Lang takes 15 weeks to complete), you do all the input sessions work online, through multimedia materials organised into 30 units and an Orientation Module.

You complete interactive tasks, discuss topics in forums and collaborate with other trainees in a virtual classroom (we meet online once-a-week – always on a Saturday, always for 60 minutes) – all ONLINE, either solo or collaboratively, with tutor support, evaluation and comments.

Then, during Weeks 10-12, you come to Warsaw for 3 weeks to:

  • do your observed and assessed teaching practice, incl. lesson planning with tutor support
  • observe other trainees’ lessons
  • observe experienced teachers in the classroom
  • take part in feedback sessions after observed lessons
  • discuss your progress during individual tutorials with your tutors
  • consult your ideas for written assignments

After that, you spend the final 3 weeks of the course working online and completing your written assignments.

The online course is longer and more flexible at the same time. You decide when you work online, except the weekly 60-minute live session on Saturdays, when the time and dates are fixed. Also, the Warsaw TP practice only takes 3 weeks (Monday-Friday) and the pace is slower than the pace of a 4-week full-time course.

CERTIFICATE

The CELTA certificate you receive on completion of the course does NOT state whether you did your CELTA face-to-face or online.

What happens online during the CELTA course?

There is an Orientation Module (Week 1) to start with. It takes up to 6 hours and it helps you learn how to work on the platform and it lets you meet your fellow trainees.

There are 30 units (each one takes up to 3 hours to complete) that you need to cover during the entire course.

The course timetable (that you get during Week 1) organises and manages your online work. You know which units you need to complete every week. But it is flexible within each week – you decide when exactly you work on them.

There are 12 fixed meetings in the virtual classroom (LiveRoom) held on Saturdays at 18:00-19:15, where you meet your Online Tutor and fellow trainees to work collaboratively.

There is also an online forum where you need to complete assigned tasks every week.

There are 4 written assignments to submit during the course.

What’s a typical face-to-face CELTA day in Warsaw like?

  • 9:00-10:30 Unassisted lesson planning  & preparation (90 mins)
  • 10:30-13:30 Teaching Practice (TP)- teaching & lesson observation (160 mins+break)
  • 13:30-14:30 lunch break (60 mins)
  • 14:35 -16:00 TP feedback incl. a mini input session (85 mins)
  • 16:00-17:00 Assisted lesson planning with Tutors (60 mins)
  • 17:00-18:00 Unassisted lesson planning & preparation (60 mins)

Milada Krajewska | Main Course Tutor, Online Course Tutor  & Teaching Practice Tutor | Head of CELTA @ Lang

Milada works as the Academic Development Manager for the Lang Teacher Training Centre in Warsaw (ODN Lang), designing and organising professional development events for teachers of English and other languages. When she did her CELTA, she had been teaching for 17 years, and what she loved about her CELTA adventure was the way she was constantly challenged to develop her teaching skills despite years of experience in teaching, training and writing ELT coursebooks. A real eye-opener. As a CELTA trainer, Milada loves to observe how trainees spread their lesson-planning-and-running wings, how they turn into acute observers of their friends’ lessons and how much they benefit from giving and getting constructive feedback. Designing feedback and input sessions is the second best part of the CELTA tutoring experience for Milada.

 

Aeddan Shaw | Main Course Tutor, Online Course Tutor  & Teaching Practice Tutor

Aeddan is a teacher, CELTA trainer and assessor who has been based in Krakow for over 10 years. A graduate in philosophy and applied linguistics, he takes great delight in learning first hand that most second language acquisition theories are wrong, thanks to his two small sons. With the experience of delivering and assessing CELTA courses in both Europe and North America, Aeddan is particularly interested in the issues of teaching large, multilevel classes and with minimal resources.
As he is rather too fond of saying that he doesn’t have any hobbies, he has children.

 

 

Amanda Davies | Main Course Tutor, Online Course Tutor  & Teaching Practice Tutor

Amanda has worked as a teacher, teacher trainer and academic manager in the UK, Russia, Spain, Lebanon and Poland. She has worked with every level and age group but her passion lies in teaching young learners. She regularly presents at conferences on topics such as inclusive teaching and visible learning. More recently she has been training Lebanese teachers in Beirut to enhance the experience of the Syrian refugee children currently living there. Amanda has written numerous articles and is an author of ELT materials. She loves mountain sports so happily calls Poland home.

 

Alex Tilbury | Teaching Practice Tutor

Alex lives in Katowice, Poland. When he’s not busy on face-to-face CELTA and DELTA courses he works as a teacher, consultant, book reviewer, inspector,  assessor, online tutor, and author of learner and teacher training materials. He wrote the International House Language Awareness Course and was part of the author team for the English Unlimited coursebook series, published by CUP. He was born and grew up in England and studied at the University of York before coming to Poland in 1997, spending eight years working for an IH school, and then going freelance. He’s also worked in India, Germany, Romania, the  Czech Republic, and South Africa. In his free time, he enjoys books, cooking, crosswords, and red wine.

 

Sandy Millin |  Online Course Tutor  & Teaching Practice Tutor

Sandy is an experienced CELTA tutor, teacher trainer and teacher who has worked in Borneo, Paraguay, Czech Republic, Crimea, United States, Canada,  Thailand, Spain and the UK. She is currently working as the Director of Studies at International House Bydgoszcz and as a part-time CELTA tutor in Warsaw.  She is passionate about teaching and is constantly trying to develop professionally. When she’s not teaching, she’s normally reading blogs, working on her languages and taking far too many photos of the interesting places she visits.

 

Adrian Post | Teaching Practice Tutor

Adrian has been a CELTA trainer since 2010 and has worked on many CELTA courses in Poland, the UK and Iran for a number of respected schools and institutions. He brings considerable teaching experience to the course, having worked with adult learners of all levels and ages, teaching General and Business English, Exam Preparation and ESP. He has also been a school director, written teaching materials and delivered lectures and workshops for educational publishers. He now teaches in-company and is studying for an MA in Educational Management at the University of Bath, UK.
When he’s not doing this, he tries hard to fulfill his role as an ‘old dad’ and to find time to keep up with world news – perhaps because he can’t travel as often and as far as he’d like to…

PRICE

The online course price is 5400 PLN (early bird fee) | 5700 PLN (standard fee).

It includes:

  • the course fee
  • the Cambridge Assessment English fees
  • access to a pre-CELTA Language Awareness online course.

Please note that in order to qualify for an early bird fee, payment of the full fee must be made a minimum of 4 working weeks before the course start date.

Payment of the full fee must be made 10 days before the course starts, at the latest.

CAN I APPLY?
By all means – if you meet the following criteria from Cambridge:

  •     If you have a standard of education equivalent to that required for entry into higher education.
  •     If you are aged 20 or over.
  •     If you have a standard of English (language proficiency and language awareness)  which will enable you to teach at a range of levels – the required minimum is C1 or higher (CEFR scale).
  • If you are comfortable using a computer to communicate with people and study and if you have good-quality access to the internet.

These criteria are assessed at an interview and during the application process.

PAYMENT
In order to secure a place on the course, you need to pay a deposit of 1000 PLN within 3 days of being offered a place. The balance is due 10 days before the course starts, at the latest.
